General Cardiology
UAB Medicine provides expert, personalized services from our general cardiology clinics at The Kirklin Clinic of UAB Hospital, UAB Hospital-Highlands, and at our suburban clinic at Acton Road just off I-459. Preventive Cardiology
UAB Preventive Cardiology helps patients determine their risk for heart disease, so that those who are most at risk can take steps toward better heart health, with the goal of preventing or postponing symptoms. For patients with existing heart disease, our specialists offer the latest treatments and work with you to manage your condition. Changes in lifestyle, diet and exercise – combined with medical and surgical treatments – can help minimize symptoms and keep them from coming back as often.
Hypertension Clinic
UAB Medicine has a long history of expert management and treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure). The nationally recognized physician specialists at the UAB Hypertension Clinic are certified by the American Society of Hypertension, and they have decades of experience in evaluating and treating complex hypertension cases. We offer the newest hypertension therapies, which can include medications, devices, and lifestyle changes.
Electrophysiology
UAB Medicine electrophysiologists are regional and world leaders in diagnosing and treating heart rhythm problems (arrhythmias). We perform more than 600 procedures each year and have extensive knowledge in treating all types of complex arrhythmias. Our program performs pioneering work in ablation procedures to treat atrial fibrillation and in designing advanced pacemakers and cardioverter defibrillators. Congenital Heart Disease Program
Treatment advances for congenital and structural heart disease have significantly increased the life expectancy for children born with heart problems. This is good news for patients, but it also means that they may face new heart problems as they get older, including arrhythmias, endocarditis, and heart failure. UAB Medicine’s Congenital Heart Disease Program features a team of pediatric and adult cardiologists, cardiovascular surgeons, cardiovascular anesthesiologists, and maternal/fetal medicine specialists who treat patients before birth, throughout childhood and adolescence, and into adulthood.
Structural Heart & Valve Program
The UAB Structural Heart & Valve Program is the first and largest in Alabama, providing continuing care for patients who have or are at risk for valve disease. Pulmonary Vascular Disease Clinic
UAB Medicine offers some of the most advanced treatments available for pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Our Pulmonary Vascular Disease Clinic treats hundreds of patients each year and features a comprehensive team of specialists, including cardiothoracic surgeons, pulmonologists, rheumatologists, sleep disorder specialists, and a geneticist. Heart Failure Program
There is no cure for heart failure, but the cardiac experts with the UAB Advanced Heart Failure Program can help you can get better. Our program is staffed by a comprehensive team of advanced heart failure specialists who are among the nation’s leaders in their field. We conduct clinical trials for medications and treatment devices that are not available at most medical centers.
Our team works directly with each patient to develop a personalized treatment plan that may include both medical and surgical options. Surgical options may include mechanical circulatory support devices such as a VAD (ventricular assist device), as well as heart and heart/lung transplantation.
Heart Transplant
Since the first heart transplant in the southeast was performed at UAB in 1981, the UAB Heart Transplant Program has evolved into one of the most distinguished programs of its kind in the nation.
