The PGY2 Critical Care Pharmacy Residency at UAB Hospital is accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacist (ASHP). It is a one-year program designed to provide extensive experience in a variety of critical care units and build upon skills developed as a clinical pharmacist during a post-graduate year 1 (PGY1) residency. Its focus is the development of the skills and confidence necessary to independently provide advanced pharmacotherapy management to patients in critical care settings. In addition to qualifying the resident for clinical pharmacy specialist positions in critical care or faculty areas, the successful completion of the program will also prepare the graduate to attain board certification in critical care pharmacy (BCCCP).
The PGY2 Critical Care Residency Program at UAB Hospital includes a combination of required learning experiences (rotations) and elective learning experiences tailored to the residents’ interest areas.
Orientation provides a general overview of the departmental organization, support units, and resident responsibilities. Benefits include health and accident insurance, holiday time off, and support to attend residency related professional conference(s).

Why did you choose UAB Medicine?
The PGY2 Critical Care program at UAB Medicine was initially appealing because of the unique rotation offerings in areas involving mechanical circulatory support and transplant intensive care units. While this is still true, it is the culture within the critical care department and the integration of pharmacists into the daily operations of their units that have kept me here after PGY1. The pharmacists here do a great job of modeling practice for their trainees, and they have worked hard to make pharmacists a central part of their services’ care teams. UAB Medicine’s ICUs have the sickest of the sick patients, and they provide lots of learning opportunities for residents.
Our goal is to develop a highly skilled practitioner who will be successful in any setting they choose to practice after graduation.
