About

UAB Spain Rehabilitation Center (Spain Rehab, or SRC) is one of the southeast’s leading providers of physical medicine and rehabilitation services. We provide state-of-the-art inpatient and outpatient care and conduct important research to help improve the long-term function and quality of life for patients with an injury or disability. Spain Rehab is the hub for UAB Medicine’s Traumatic Brain Injury Model Systems, Spinal Cord Injury Model Systems,  and the National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Data Center.

Our team of specialists provides the highest levels of service across the care continuum, which is the hallmark of a quality rehabilitation program. These services include:

Physician Services

Our team of physiatrists (doctors who specialize in physical medicine and rehabilitation) work with patients to maximize what they can do and help them adapt to the things they cannot do. A physiatrist should be consulted when pain, weakness, or disability prevents a person from achieving his/her desired level of independence. Care plans include medication, injections, therapy, recommendations for adaptive devices, and partnering with other medical specialists as needed. Our physiatrists treat a wide variety of injuries, illnesses, disabilities, and diagnoses.

Neuropsychology and Rehabilitation Psychology

These are specialties within psychology focused on developing programs to help patients with disabilities and chronic health conditions achieve daily lives that are personally fulfilling, socially meaningful, and more functional. These specialists are experts in understanding the relationship between the brain and behavior.

Physical Therapy (PT)

Physical therapy helps improve overall health and restore functional skills and abilities such as bed mobility, moving from one setting to another, walking, range of motion, and balance, while also considering and addressing pain relief. Our physical therapists use specially designed exercises and equipment to help patients regain or improve their physical abilities, with or without adaptive devices. Unique programs offered include aquatic therapy and wheelchair positioning and seating.

Occupational Therapy (OT)

Occupational therapy helps improve patients’ overall function, with the goals of enhancing quality of life and helping them return to their homes and communities. This includes maximizing their ability to perform daily living and self-care tasks such as dressing and bathing, as well as visual and perceptual training, cognitive re-training, work simplification, and the effective use of adaptive and assistive devices.

Speech-Language Therapy

These specialists assess and treat speech-language disorders and swallowing issues, along with helping improve social and cognitive communication. Our speech therapists may consider alternative communication systems for patients with severe speech and/or comprehension impairment.

Music Therapy

These specialists provide relaxing, entertaining, and therapeutic programs for anxiety, depression, pain, and emotional/spiritual support. Our music therapists also focus on patients with neurological conditions following a stroke or brain injury, using music to improve cognitive, sensory, language, and motor abilities.

Therapeutic Recreation Specialists

These specialists help patients return to their communities and participate in leisure activities that improve their quality of life. They also share knowledge with patients to address any physical, emotional, social, or cognitive barriers to leisure activities through adaptations, alternatives, and community resources.

Rehabilitation Case Management

These professionals help patients and their families set goals that will be integrated into the treatment plan. They also help coordinate care, handle paperwork and processes related to inpatient stays, work with patients and their families to arrange for a safer discharge, and serve as patient advocates.

Orthotists and Prosthetists

These specialists create or help identify devices that allow patients to regain or improve their mobility and functionality. They design and fabricate medical supportive devices and measure and fit patients for them. Such devices include artificial limbs (arms, hands, legs, and feet), braces, and other medical devices.

Outpatient Rehabilitation Therapy Services

This group helps patients improve their quality of life following a hospital stay or serious injury or illness. Comprehensive care is delivered by a multi-specialty group that includes physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, and community partners. They create personalized therapy plans for patients based on their goals, condition, and stage of recovery. Our services include a wheelchair seating and fitting clinic, community mobility and driving programs, and other ways to promote independence in the home and community. We maintain close relationships with our community partners, including the Alabama Head Injury Foundation, the Lakeshore Foundation, and the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation. Click here for more information.

NEW BUILDING COMING SOON
In May 2022, UAB Medicine broke ground on a new inpatient rehabilitation facility, replacing the current UAB Spain Rehabilitation Center. The 106-bed, 11-story facility is being constructed on 7th Avenue South behind the UAB Sparks Building and is expected to open in 2025. It will feature the most advanced design and the latest technology, and each floor will be dedicated to caring for specific types of patients, including those receiving care for stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, and epilepsy.
Each inpatient room will have an overhead lift, and patients will have access to a therapy gym, private therapy suites, and dedicated speech therapy areas. The new facility also will include a golf putting green, basketball court, and other amenities designed to enhance the rehabilitation experience for patients and better support their physical, mental, and emotional recovery.
