Advanced Wound Care Center

Advanced Wound Care Center

UAB Medicine St. Vincent’s Advanced Wound Care Center-St. Clair provides expert care for when a wound isn’t healing as it should. We listen carefully to your needs and concerns and create a customized care plan to help.

We specialize in treating complex, slow-healing wounds, including diabetic foot ulcers and leg ulcers. Our treatments include:

  • Cellulitis therapy
  • Compression therapy
  • Hyperbaric oxygen therapy
  • Infection management and prevention
  • Wound cleaning
  • Wound dressing

Wound-healing

Wound care after surgery is critical for your health. Performing regular self-checks, especially in hard-to-see places, may help prevent infection and serious complications.

Wound-healing services include:

  • Advanced wound dressings
  • Bio-engineered skin substitutes
  • Compression therapies
  • Epidermal autografting
  • Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (see below)
  • Negative pressure vacuum therapy
  • Weekly debridement of devitalized tissue or biofilms

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy

A hyperbaric chamber is a sealed environment that delivers oxygen-rich therapy to promote wound healing. During hyperbaric oxygen therapy, concentrated oxygen quickly increases in your bloodstream and helps heal the wound from the inside out. This painless therapy is used to treat multiple conditions, in addition to diabetic foot ulcers and slow-healing wounds. When hyperbaric oxygen therapy is recommended, our care team takes the time to answer your questions.

Hyperbaric chamber for other conditions

Our wound care doctors use hyperbaric oxygen therapy to treat many adult health conditions, including:

  • Severe anemia
  • Air bubbles in blood vessels (arterial gas embolism)
  • Burns, including radiation injury
  • Carbon monoxide poisoning
  • Crush injury to skin or bone
  • Decompression sickness
  • Diabetic foot ulcers
  • Venous leg ulcers
  • Gangrene
  • Skin infections
  • Sudden hearing or vision loss
  • Traumatic brain injury or brain abscess

We also show you how to improve your wound-cleaning hygiene at home as part of a personalized recovery plan. Slow-healing wounds can be frustrating, but we will help you get better. Our goal is to help prevent rehospitalization for infection or wound-healing complications.
