Program Highlights
UAB Medicine’s Basil I. Hirschowitz Endoscopic Center of Excellence is a nationally and internationally renowned center for advanced endoscopic care. This new, state-of-the-art facility is staffed by a team of experienced and highly trained physicians, nurses, and technicians who provide comprehensive and multispecialty endoscopic services for even the most complex procedures. The center is named for Dr. Hirschowitz, UAB’s first Gastroenterology Division Director and Professor Emeritus of medicine, physiology and biophysics at UAB, who in 1957 invented the first fully flexible fiberoptic endoscope. That scope now resides in the permanent collection in the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.
