Program Highlights
Kidney Stones
UAB Urology faculty members have special training in caring for patients with kidney stones. Their expertise in kidney stone removal procedures includes shockwave lithotripsy, ureteroscopy, percutaneous nephrolithotomy, laparoscopic and robotic-assisted methods, and open surgery. Strategies for kidney stone prevention follow a patient-centered approach that may include dietary modifications and medical therapy. Our team conducts pioneering research aimed at determining the underlying causes of kidney stone formation and developing novel treatments for both simple and complex cases.
Infertility
UAB Urology physicians have years of experience in diagnosing and treating both male and female infertility. We develop highly individualized care plans using a team approach that includes a urologist, a reproductive endocrinologist, specialized nurses, and laboratory scientists. A variety of conventional treatments are available, including corrective microsurgery, and procedures such as intrauterine insemination and in vitro fertilization may be used for untreatable conditions and more challenging cases. As a major research center, UAB Medicine investigates new advances in fertility aimed at increasing the chances of conceiving healthy babies.
Urologic Oncology
UAB Urology’s medical and surgical specialists have extensive training in their areas of expertise and are active leaders in their fields. UAB Medicine is one of only 15 medical centers in the country with the state-of-the-art da Vinci Single-Port robotic platform. This innovative system enables our surgeons to enter the body through one small abdominal incision before deploying the robot’s surgical instruments, which greatly improves patient outcomes and recovery time. This is particularly true in cancer cases, as we can access more narrow spaces without compromising precision.
Reconstructive Urology
UAB Urology features the only reconstructive urologists in the state who are fellowship-trained in helping restore normal urinary or sexual function, and we perform more urethral reconstruction procedures than any other medical center in Alabama, Mississippi, the Florida Panhandle, and western Georgia. Common conditions treated include erectile dysfunction, female and male urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, urethral stricture, and ureteral stricture. Our specialists are dedicated to providing state-of-the-art care to minimize or eliminate problems that may arise from these conditions.
Neurogenic Bladder
Our Neuro-Urology team delivers the latest treatments for this bladder dysfunction, which results from neurological conditions such as spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, transverse myelitis, spina bifida, bladder extrophy, and spinal surgery complications. Our physicians have over 50 years of combined clinical experience, and they are supported by highly trained nurse practitioners and nurses. We combine this expertise with state-of-the-art equipment, which allows the team to diagnose and treat even the most complex cases with one goal in mind: restoring quality of life for both patients and their caregivers.
Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery
The Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery team is led by the first urologist in Alabama to become certified in this specialty. This experienced group treats numerous symptoms associated with female pelvic floor dysfunction, including urinary and fecal incontinence, urinary retention, pelvic organ prolapse, recurrent UTI, and interstitial cystitis. Treatment options range from nonsurgical and minimally invasive procedures to reconstructive surgeries that do not include mesh. We also emphasize education and empowerment for patients, to help them manage or overcome their symptoms and be more involved in their care plan.
Men’s Health
The Men’s Health Clinic at The Kirklin Clinic of UAB Hospital treats some of the most common male health conditions, including infertility, incontinence, sexual health issues, and genitourinary cancer, and it also provides services such as prostate cancer screening, vasectomies, and vasectomy reversals. Our experienced team of physicians, surgeons, nurse practitioners, radiation and medical oncologists, and urology nurses and technicians work together to make the most accurate diagnoses and deliver the most effective treatments, from complex genital and urinary reconstructive surgery to minimally invasive laser procedures for enlarged prostate.
Pediatric Urology
The UAB Section of Pediatric Urology features nationally recognized physicians and surgical subspecialists who are trained in open, minimally invasive, and robotic procedures for male and female children, teenagers, and young adults, including patients with congenital problems who are transitioning to adult care. They diagnose and treat neurogenic bladder dysfunction, voiding dysfunction, male and female genitourinary abnormalities, obstructive uropathy, urinary stone disease, vesicoureteral reflux, urinary trauma, and cloacal and exstrophic anomalies. They actively participate in one of the nation’s largest multidisciplinary clinics for children with spina bifida.
