UAB Medicine employees recently battled for the “tin can trophy” in the 2022 CANstruction event, which was hosted by UAB Medicine’s Men in Nursing Employee Resource Group, UAB Hospital nursing leadership, and the Birmingham Chapter of the American Association of Men in Nursing.
CANstruction teams collected canned goods and used them to construct the most impressive structures possible, each with its own theme. Prizes were awarded for first, second, and third place, along with a fan favorite winner:
- First place – Center for Patient Flow, “Blaze”
- Second place – Surgical Nursing, “Piece of Cake”
- Third place – Medical Nursing, “In the Magic City”
- Fan favorite – Emergency Department, “Turkey Sandwich”
The canned goods and other items collected for the competition were donated to the Blazer Kitchen, which provides more than 3,500 pounds of food each week to UAB employees, students, and patients who are experiencing food insecurity. The CANstruction event collected more than 8,000 pounds of food and other necessities, including:
- Enough food for 6,750 meals
- 149 bars of soap
- 52 tubes of toothpaste
- 61 toothbrushes
