Cystic Fibrosis

Cystic fibrosis primarily affects the lungs and digestive system, but respiratory problems cause the most serious complications for those suffering from the disease. This life-threatening, genetic condition causes thick mucus to build up in the body’s organs, especially the lungs and pancreas. The cells responsible for producing mucus, sweat, and digestive juices change the consistency of those bodily fluids from a thin, slippery secretion to one that is thick and sticky. As a result, the lungs become clogged with mucus, making it difficult to breathe. Bacteria also can get trapped in the lungs, causing serious infections. In the pancreas, the mucus interferes with the organ’s normal function of helping the body digest food.

UAB Medicine is a global leader in the clinical care and research of cystic fibrosis, making us a unique resource for patients in Alabama. We are home to the state’s only accredited Cystic Fibrosis Center, as designated by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. And we are one of just 40 centers worldwide connected to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s Therapeutics Development Network (TDN). As one of only a handful of translational research centers funded by the foundation, we can offer our cystic fibrosis patients the opportunity to be part of the development of the newest therapies.

The increasing population of people living with cystic fibrosis has responded to UAB Medicine’s broad capabilities, and we are proud that we consistently enjoy some of the largest numbers of patients enrolled in research trials at any given time. Along with evidence-based treatments and research, our cystic fibrosis team also focuses on excellent supportive care to improve how patients feel and function.
