UAB Medicine is committed to providing members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community with compassionate, respectful, and personalized health care that is relevant to you and your particular needs. We encourage you to be open with your provider about your sexual orientation, sexual behavior, and gender identity so that we can give you the best possible care. All conversations and personal health information is kept confidential, however, you may ask that providers refrain from entering this information in your medical record.
Why UAB
UAB Medicine is recognized as a “Leader in LGBT Healthcare Equality” by the Human Rights Campaign. To earn this designation, facilities must train staff in LGBT health care, have LGBT-responsive policies, and disseminate those policies to the public and staff members. UAB Medicine is proud to maintain supportive policies related to patient non-discrimination, visitation, and cultural sensitivity training.
Throughout all of our facilities, we promote LGBT health equity and equal access to care. We also have partnered with the Birmingham-area LGBT community to develop specific programs and services to meet the health care challenges the LGBT population may face. The services we offer include:
- Primary, specialty , emergency, and hospital care to LGBT patients and their families
- The UAB LGBT Mental Health and Wellness Clinic, which provides outpatient psychopharmacology and therapy
- The 1917 Clinic, which provides comprehensive health care for persons living with HIV infection
- Transgender health services, including hormone therapy
Our nationally ranked medical expertise covers virtually every condition across the entire health spectrum. Our providers fully support UAB’s policy to treat all patients and to not discriminate with regard to race, color, religion, national origin, age, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or disability. Concerns about care delivered by any UAB Medicine provider may be directed to a Patient & Family Advocate at advocate@uabmc.edu or by calling 205-934-CARE (2273).
