UAB Emergency Medicine provides compassionate and immediate care for the entire spectrum of critically ill or injured adults. Round-the-clock care and access to highly trained physicians, nurses, technologists, and other specialists make UAB the best choice for emergency care. For less critical emergencies, the UAB Hospital-Highlands Emergency Department provides convenient and accessible care for a wide range of illnesses and injuries, backed by UAB specialists and technology.
UAB Hospital is the only hospital in the state of Alabama designated as a Level 1 trauma center by the American College of Surgeons. It also is part of Alabama’s busiest and most comprehensive Stroke Center, providing advanced care for a large population of stroke patients. Other highlights include:
- We were the first emergency department in the area to provide therapeutic hypothermia therapy for patients successfully resuscitated after cardiac arrest. Hypothermia therapy is the only proven intervention for preserving neurologic function after such survival.
- Our virtual Chest Pain Evaluation Unit evaluates patients experiencing chest pain to help ensure that they receive the most advanced, evidence-based care.
- The Emergency Medicine department is an active participant in a number of clinical research trials focusing on acute resuscitation and emergency care delivery.
