Physicians and surgeons who specialize in foot and ankle problems provide care for a variety of injuries and diseases, using both surgical and non-surgical methods. They treat conditions such as flat feet, bunions and bunionettes, and hammertoes, as well as inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, gout, and tendonitis. They also treat general foot or ankle discomfort, including ankle instability, plantar fasciitis, tarsal tunnel syndrome, and foot and ankle injuries, along with pain related to diabetes and certain nerve disorders. Our range of services also includes customized prescriptions for orthotics (braces), prosthetics (artificial limbs), and pedorthics (shoes and orthotic devices). Athletes, including dancers, are frequently treated by foot and ankle specialists.
The UAB Department of Orthopaedic Surgery features experienced, fellowship-trained foot and ankle specialists, along with a full-time podiatrist. Our nationally and internationally ranked physicians and surgeons are supported by musculoskeletal radiologists who carry out advanced diagnostic imaging tests such as X-rays, MRI, CT scans, ultrasound, and fluoroscopy (a type of continuous X-ray). UAB Orthopaedics works closely with other medical specialties, including physical rehabilitation and nutritional therapy, to develop a comprehensive care plan that offers the greatest chance of restoring or improving mobility and reducing or eliminating pain.
UAB performs more original and corrective total ankle arthroplasty surgeries than any medical center in the world. In this procedure, worn out joint cartilage on the surface of the ankle is replaced. We are actively involved in research projects focused on new designs, materials, and methods related to prostheses and bone and joint support. We also have developed several unique surgical techniques for troublesome foot and ankle conditions, including a procedure for chronic heel pain that has demonstrated a high success rate.
