UAB Outpatient Rehabilitation Services provides the highest quality of rehabilitation therapy services to help patients improve their quality of life following a hospital stay or a serious injury or illness. Comprehensive care is delivered by a multi-specialty group, including physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, and community partners. The goal is to create personalized therapy plans for patients based on their goals, condition, and phase of recovery. Orthopaedic conditions treated include:
- Musculoskeletal injuries, including tendonitis, fractures, and sprains/strains
- Spinal conditions, including disc injuries, lower back pain, and neck pain
- Sports-related injuries
- Joint replacements
Neurological conditions treated include:
- Traumatic brain injury (TBI)
- Spinal cord injury (SCI)
- Stroke
- Parkinson’s disease
Other conditions treated include:
- Multiple traumatic accidents/conditions
- Amputations
The specialty assessment, therapy, and support programs we offer include:
- Evaluations for walking/running ability, balance and risk of falling, and movement screenings
- Transitional rehabilitation, to help patients move from inpatient rehab to home
- The Milestone Project, a collaboration with Lakeshore Foundation and the Alabama Head Injury Foundation to help improve the quality of life for patients with a spinal cord and/or traumatic brain injury
- Community mobility and driving program, which helps patients regain their ability to safely drive and/or use other transportation options to get around the community after a major injury or illness
- Wheelchair and seating program, which works with patients with physical disabilities to ensure that wheelchairs, seats, and cushions fit properly
- Concussion program, which helps patients overcome issues with movement, balance, and thinking
- Sports medicine program, which help patients recover from injuries caused by exercise or sports and return to an active lifestyle
- Aquatic therapy program, which offers low-impact pool therapy for patients with a variety of injuries or illnesses
- LSVT BIG and LOUD programs, for patients with Parkinson’s disease
- Cognitive strategy training
- Treatments for aphasia (the loss of the ability to understand or express speech)
- Management of lymphedema (buildup of fluid in soft body tissues) in the upper limbs and head/neck for patients treated for cancer
- Wellness program, which helps patients enhance their lifestyle, improve their athletic performance, and/or prevent injury (no physician referral needed)
