UAB Medicine Addiction Recovery: Addiction Can Affect Anyone

Family & Support Services

How do you know if you or your loved one needs help?

The best way to know if someone needs treatment is to have them participate in an assessment. During the assessment, a trained counselor will talk with your loved one about their use of drugs and alcohol and what problems they are experiencing as a result. Based on a set of guidelines, the physician will determine if treatment is needed at this point and what level of care or intensity is needed.

For many people, screening and assessments are the first steps in the process. The Addiction Recovery Program at UAB offers comprehensive assessments for drug or alcohol problems. Call 205-975-7350 today to get started on the road to recovery.

Family Services
At the UAB Medicine Addiction Recovery Program, we value the involvement of family members in the treatment process. We know that when a person has a substance use disorder, the whole family system is impacted. Our program offers support, education, and therapy to family members as they begin their own healing journey. Our educational topics include the disease concept of addiction, boundaries, healthy communication, spirituality and the recovery process.

Families meet for education each Monday from noon until 1 pm and for support and processing each Thursday evening from 5 pm to 6:30 pm. Family members often say that feeling connected with family members of other patients in the same circumstances was a huge part of their own recovery. We offer individual family therapy sessions, which are part of our commitment to offering a truly individualized approach to care. Our family therapy staff have worked many years in the field of addiction recovery, so they truly understand how uncertain and hopeful this time can be.

The UAB Addiction Recovery Program provides unique support for families of young adults who enter our program. The young adult treatment component provides specific treatment planning and interventions for both families and their young adult.

We have learned that recovery is possible for both individuals and families. We know that change is a process and can be difficult, but we will be there throughout the process and on the other side.

We invite you to participate in our Hope of Recovery sessions:

  • Weekly education sessions are held each Monday from noon to 1 pm via Zoom for patients’ family members.
  • Weekly community support group sessions for families are held each Thursday from 5 pm to 6:30 pm via Zoom and are open to everyone.
